My favorite memory, is when my father cam home from Afghanistan for the first time. I was in fourth grade when he came back and I had made him a patch to put underneath his squadron patch. On my way there I had told my mother that I was gonna be tough and I was not going to cry! The hours we spent there waiting felt endless. Just sitting around with a bunch of lonely wife’s and excited children felt like my father was never going to be coming back. My older sister sat with my mom and I played with the long stretch of bubble wrap that they had laid out on the floor for the kids to run across. With every step that I took my feet created a instant POP as I rushed through the walk way. I felt like a bubble wrap model. But the bubble wrap still couldn't get my mind off of what I was waiting for!!!!!!! My own blood, my father was coming home I was more excited than I have ever been. The room we were in was like a giant garage for airplanes. The KC-130's were stored there. The walls were gray and the floor wascement. They were metal seats and plastic tables filled with food. Everyone was standing at the gate in hopes of seeing there families There were little kids all the way up to grandmothers just standing and waiting. I still remember every time a plane flew by every sprang up from their chairs to see if it was our heroes coming home, but with every engine noise there was bit of regret for getting up. My sister and I were dressed in cute little marine shirts and we had American flags in hand. The bubble wrap was destroyed from every kid who ran across it. I was so bored just waiting there. Until finally I heard the most beautiful sound in the world. The sound of a KC-130 bringing our family members home!!!! The plane flew above us and a made its landing in. Then the plane came to a halt, and the rear entrance lowered. My heart was pounding as the first man walked off the plane. His son ran up to him yelling "DADDY! You made it home!!!!!" I was starting to get worried though. At least 20 men came off of that air plane and not one of them was MY dad. But than when I thought the worst had happened, the last hero stepped off the plane. I ran to him with my smile facing from ear to ear. He than droppedhis bags and got down on one knee and spread his arms open. I leaped into my dads arms and gave him the biggest hug a fourth grader could. I was thrilled to see him. My mother and sister soon followed behind me and wrapped around him. My life officially felt perfect. My family was together again and most of all I didn’t shed a tear. Until my father looked at me and removed his squadron patch. There on his flight suit was my hand made patch that had "I love you!" sewn in. I couldn't help myself, I started to drench my cheeks in tears. I dug my head into his shoulder and cried. I finally realized why my mother always cries when she sees someone, she loves that she hadn't seen for a really long time. When you are separated from someone for 7 months and you don’t know how the feel or what they are going through, you start to imagine the worst things possible. But when you see them and you realize that they are okay and they made it home and you are hugging them once again, you can't help but feel warm inside and cry tears of joy.
